Contrary to general belief, banker/customer relationship is not only governed by agreement of the parties. Banks must comply with monetary policies and guidelines issued from time to time by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which is the apex regulatory authority that regulates and supervises the activities/operations of all banks and other financial institutions in Nigeria.

In furtherance of its regulatory functions, the CBN regularly issues guidelines and directives to Banks on permissible charges and their acceptable limits.
